The DMZ, near Chulwon - October 1999

We came here with Scarlett, a friend and colleague from Kyung Hee University. We visited the tunnels that the North Koreans had spent years digging back in the seventies in preparation for an all-out invasion of the south. The South Koreans have discovered three tunnels, so far (experts believe there are a total of six). The North had dug up to just several hundred metres from the surface on the southern side of the DMZ; they were going to use dynamite to simultaneously blast open the remaining earth in each tunnel and swarm the south with two million troops before it or the American military would know what hit them.
Walking through the Chulwon tunnel was an eerie experience. Definitely NOT for the claustrophobic: the ceiling is about five feet from the floor.
